Ayurveda is a whole-body holistic system of medicine that began in India over 5,000 years ago.  The word Ayurveda comes from a Sanskrit word, where Ayus life and Veda means knowledge, meaning the knowledge of life. Some consider Ayurveda to be the oldest healing science.  It is a natural approach to all aspects of health and wellbeing to maintain a balance in the body, mind and spirit to prevent and treat illness.  The primary focus of Ayurveda is prevention.  Where western medicine focuses on diagnosis and prescribing medication, Ayurveda focuses on healthy living for all aspects of life.

Ayurveda is based around the belief that each person has a constitution that is a pattern of energy, a unique individual combination of mental, physical and emotional characteristics that comprise of their own constitution. These are the doshas.  There are three doshas and each person has all three doshas with one being the primary. The doshas control how your body works and are related to the five elements found in the universe: space, air, fire, water and earth.  The three doshas are Vata (space and air); Pitta (fire and water); and Kapha (water and earth).  When one of the doshas goes out of balance it can affect the other doshas and can create an imbalance in the body which can lead to disease and illness. All things in the universe are connected, when one dosha goes out of balance it affects the others.  Ayurveda focuses on the root cause of disease and illness and uses nutrition, lifestyle changes, and natural treatments to align the doshas and balance.
